Day Trip to Seiffen: The Toy Village with Its Museum, Show Workshop and Hoop Turner

Seiffen is a little over 40 kilometres from Altenberg, and hardly any other place stands so firmly for Ore Mountains nutcrackers, smoking men and Christmas pyramids. This day plan gets you to the workshop, the museum and the hoop turner without wasted journeys.

Seiffen is probably the best-known village in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge), and you notice it. Along the main street one shop of turned wooden figures follows the next, more than 40 market stalls go up in Advent, and at weekends the village is busy. The trip is still worth it, mainly for things you will not find in a shop: people turning and painting wooden figures, and a water wheel that has driven a lathe since the 18th century. We describe the day as we would plan it from Altenberg, with honest driving times and the places where you tend to lose time.

Getting there: two routes from Altenberg

Seiffen lies south-west of Altenberg, also right on the Czech border. By car you have two options:

  • Via the Czech Republic: from Altenberg via Rehefeld-Zaunhaus to Moldava, a stretch through the Bohemian side of the mountains, and back into Germany near Deutscheinsiedel. About 43 kilometres, roughly 50 to 60 minutes.
  • On the German side: via Rehefeld, Holzhau and Neuhausen it is just as far, about 42 kilometres and also just under an hour. Via Frauenstein and Neuhausen it is about 54 kilometres, a little over an hour.

From Dippoldiswalde it is about 48 kilometres, again just under an hour. Without a car, Seiffen is hard work from our area: several changes via Freiberg, then bus 737. We would not recommend it for a day trip.

Parking is paid, at the machine or with the EasyPark app. There are larger car parks at the toy museum and on Jahnstraße. The open-air museum has its own car park right by the entrance.

A day in Seiffen: our suggestion

The plan works best on a weekday. The first stop explains why.

9:00 am: leave Altenberg

An early start pays off. The show workshop opens at 10 am, and in the morning it is usually easier to find a parking space in the village.

10:00 am: Seiffener Volkskunst show workshop

At the show workshop (Schauwerkstatt) at Bahnhofstraße 12 you can watch nutcrackers, smoking men, angels and candle arches being made: sawing, turning, milling, sanding, painting and assembling. The craftspeople work Monday to Friday from 10 am to 4 pm. At weekends you can look round, but the work stops. Hence the weekday.

If you want to make something yourself, book a place at "Zeit für Holzkünstler" (Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm) and paint or assemble your own souvenir. Groups can book a workshop tour of about 20 minutes (Monday to Friday 10 am to 3 pm, from €30 depending on group size). The shop next door is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.

11:00 am: Erzgebirge Toy Museum

The toy museum (Erzgebirgisches Spielzeugmuseum) at Hauptstraße 73 has existed in its present form since 1953. Its three floors hold thousands of pieces of Ore Mountains toys and Christmas craft, the oldest dating from around 1800. Highlights include a 6.30-metre indoor pyramid and the miniature Christmas landscape "Christmette zu Seiffen". In many places a sign says "Benutze mich!" ("use me!"), where children and adults may pick up and play with the toys.

It is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. According to the municipality, admission is €10.70 for adults. Children up to 16 get in free with a paying parent or grandparent, and a combined ticket with the open-air museum costs €16 for adults (as of October 2026). Allow an hour and a half, more with children.

Opposite the museum is the "Seiffener Sternenmarkt", a small market of wooden huts that opens in October and stays until the end of December.

12:30 pm: lunch

There are several inns and cafés in the village centre; the municipality lists them on its website. Important for your timing: the hoop turner at the open-air museum takes his own lunch break from 12 to 1 pm, so there is no point rushing up there before 1 pm.

1:30 pm: open-air museum and the hoop turner

The Erzgebirge Open-Air Museum (Erzgebirgisches Freilichtmuseum) is at the upper end of the village, Hauptstraße 203, about three kilometres from the toy museum. That is seven minutes by car or roughly 40 minutes uphill on foot.

At its heart is the Preissler water-powered turning mill, built in 1758–1760 and the only original water-powered workshop left in Seiffen. Its wooden water wheel is 5.20 metres across. In the low turning room a craftsman demonstrates hoop turning (Reifendrehen) every day. A ring of spruce wood is turned so that its cross-section takes the shape of an animal; the ring is then split into slices, and each slice becomes one animal. Only a handful of turners still master the technique.

The museum also has a cartwright's shop, a chip-basket maker's workshop, a miner's house and a small farm. In summer it is open from 10 am to 5 pm with a break from 12:30 to 1 pm. In the winter months it opens depending on the weather and closes at 4 pm. It is closed on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January.

3:30 pm: the church and the main street

Back in the centre, walk up to the Bergkirche, the church that appears on countless candle arches and music boxes. The octagonal church was built in 1776–1779 to plans by Christian Gotthelf Reuther, inspired by Dresden's Frauenkirche. Opening hours vary with the season. In recent Advents there were short daily tours and the "Seiffener Adventsmusik" on Sundays at 2:30 pm.

Then there is time for the shops on Hauptstraße. Prices and workmanship vary a lot. If you are looking for genuine Ore Mountains handwork, ask in the shop where and how a figure was made.

5:00 pm: drive back

In winter it is already dark by now. Allow a good hour for the drive back, more in snow.

Seiffen in Advent: what is different

The Seiffener Weihnacht Christmas market runs from 27 November to 20 December 2026, with more than 40 stalls in the village centre, open Monday to Friday 11 am to 5 pm, Saturday 10 am to 8 pm and Sunday 11 am to 6 pm. Fixed dates:

  • Saturday 28 November, 9:30 am: opening with a small miners' parade
  • Saturday 5 December, from 4:45 pm: torchlight procession along the old miners' paths, ending at the Binge mining crater
  • Saturday 12 December, 3:30 pm: the great miners' parade with more than 400 people in traditional dress
  • Saturday 19 December, 5 pm: lantern walk with Father Christmas

On Advent weekends the municipality closes the village centre to cars, on Saturdays from 9:30 am to 8 pm (from 9 am on the first Saturday) and on Sundays from 10:30 am to 6 pm. Regular buses do not run through the village then. Details are on the page Anfahrt zur Seiffener Weihnacht. The show workshop is quiet at weekends anyway, so if you can, come on a weekday in Advent too.

Which Advent markets are closer to Altenberg, for example in Geising and Schellerhau, is in our guide to Christmas markets in the Eastern Ore Mountains.

And outside the Christmas season?

The toy museum and the show workshop are open all year, and in summer the open-air museum keeps its full hours. Outside Advent the village is usually noticeably quieter and parking is easier. Because almost everything is indoors, Seiffen also works on a rainy day; more ideas for those are in Eastern Ore Mountains on a rainy day.

Combining Seiffen with Freiberg

With an early start you can add Freiberg. From Seiffen to Freiberg is just under 40 kilometres, and from there back to Altenberg about 45 kilometres, or just under 30 to Dippoldiswalde. You will have to drop something in Seiffen, usually the open-air museum.

In Freiberg the main sights are St Mary's Cathedral with its Golden Gate portal and Silbermann organs, the terra mineralia mineral collection in Freudenstein Castle, and the old town around the Obermarkt square. In Advent the Freiberger Christmarkt runs there from 24 November to 22 December 2026.

Back to Altenberg

Seiffen is a day trip; Altenberg is the quieter place to sleep. Our rooms in Altenberg at Dresdner Straße 10 each have their own bathroom and WC; seven sleep up to two guests, one up to three, from €70 per night. The next day the ski slope, cross-country trails and the Geisingberg are on your doorstep; more in our guide to winter in Altenberg.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is the Seiffen toy museum accessible?

According to the municipality of Seiffen, the Erzgebirge Toy Museum has a lift, step-free access for disabled visitors and a cloakroom. For the open-air museum with its historic buildings, it is best to ask in advance.

  • Do I need a vignette to drive from Altenberg to Seiffen via the Czech Republic?

No, as long as you do not use a Czech motorway or expressway. The route via Moldava uses ordinary country roads only. Do carry an ID card or passport, though.
