Things to Do in the Eastern Ore Mountains: 25 Day Trip Ideas, Sorted by Distance

From a mining crater at the edge of town to the Bastei Bridge: 25 places, sorted by how far they are from our two houses, with drive times and an honest note on what still works in the rain.

Most lists of things to do in the Eastern Ore Mountains (Osterzgebirge, the eastern end of the range along the Saxon–Czech border) tell you what exists. They rarely tell you how long the drive is, if a place is worth it in drizzle, or if you need a plan for getting back. We rent rooms in Altenberg and apartments in Dippoldiswalde, about 20 kilometres apart, so we have sorted the 25 places our guests ask about most by their distance from both houses.

How to read this list

Drive times come from a route planner, are rounded up and leave out time spent looking for parking. In winter, with snow on the B170 main road, add about a third. "On foot" means you won't need the car at all. The rain column is our own judgement: "yes" means you spend most of the time indoors or underground.

On foot from Altenberg

1. Altenberg Pinge

On 24 January 1620 the hollowed-out tin mine beneath Altenberg caved in. What remains is a crater roughly 400 metres across and up to 150 metres deep, its reddish rock walls right behind the houses. You can't go down into it, but a mining trail runs along the rim. From our rooms it's a few minutes' walk. More in our guide to Altenberg's sights.

2. Mining museum with tin wash house and show tunnel

At Mühlenstraße 2 stands a 16th-century ore-processing works whose water-powered stamp mill is still set in motion for visitors. The Neubeschert-Glück tunnel belongs to it, and underground it's 8 to 10 °C. According to the Altenberg Mining Museum, tours run at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm and the museum is closed on Fridays (as of October 2026). For the full mining story, see Tin mining in Altenberg and Zinnwald.

3. Geisingberg and the Louisenturm

This basalt cone of about 820 metres is Altenberg's home mountain. On top are the 18-metre Louisenturm tower, opened in 1891, and a mountain inn. In May and June the slopes are full of globeflowers and orchids. From our door it's a good half hour uphill, no scrambling.

4. Galgenteiche ponds and Kahleberg

The Galgenteiche were dug around 1550 to store water for the mines. The large pond is now a drinking-water reservoir, so swimming is not allowed. Beyond it the path climbs the Kahleberg, at 905 metres the highest peak in the Saxon part of the Eastern Ore Mountains. Routes with distances and times are in our hiking guide.

5. Erlebnisberg and the summer toboggan run

On the ski slope you'll find a toboggan run of more than 1,000 metres, mountain carts, a climbing maze and smaller rides. Entry is free and you pay per ride. The toboggan run doesn't always operate when the track is wet, and in winter the slope turns back into a ski lift. Prices and season: Altenberg summer toboggan run.

A short drive from Altenberg

6. Schellerhau Botanical Garden

Around 1,400 plant species from mountain ranges across the world on about one and a half hectares, laid out in 1906 and open from May to October. It's at its best in June, when the alpine roses flower. Practical details are in our guide to the Schellerhau Botanical Garden.

7. Bobsleigh track in the Kohlgrund

The 1,413-metre bobsleigh and luge track between Altenberg and Oberbärenburg hosts World Cup races. From November to February visitors can ride in a four-man bob with a professional pilot (age 16 and up, book ahead). Outside race days the operator offers guided track tours. Dates and options: Altenberg bobsleigh track.

8. Zinnwald show mine

The "Vereinigt Zwitterfeld zu Zinnwald" show mine takes you through the Tiefer-Bünau gallery to the Reichtroster Weitung, a huge chamber from the tin-mining era. Tungsten and lithium mica were mined here later as well. A good rainy-day choice; bring a warm jacket and check the tour times on the mine's website first.

9. Georgenfeld raised bog

A roughly 10,000-year-old bog right on the border, crossed by a 1.2-kilometre boardwalk. The boardwalk is narrow, so pushchairs won't get through. Admission and hours are on the Georgenfelder Hochmoor page at altenberg.de (in German).

10. Lugsteine and Kohlhaukuppe

Two viewpoints for people who like to walk: the Lugsteine near Zinnwald, just under 900 metres, and the Kohlhaukuppe above Geising with its tower and inn, both looking out over Bohemia. Routes are in Kohlhaukuppe and Lugsteine, and places to stop for food in Mountain inns of the Eastern Ore Mountains.

11. Geising and the Wildpark Osterzgebirge

Geising is now part of Altenberg and the starting point of the 287-kilometre Kammweg long-distance trail. On the edge of town, at the Hartmannmühle, the Wildpark Osterzgebirge keeps native wildlife and has a playground and a café-restaurant, an easy half day with small children. More family ideas: Eastern Ore Mountains with kids.

12. Lauenstein Castle

The castle above the Müglitz valley houses the Osterzgebirgsmuseum, the regional museum. It is normally closed on Mondays. Lauenstein has a station on the Müglitztalbahn line, so you can do this trip without a car. How to combine Lauenstein, Glashütte and Weesenstein in one day is covered in The Müglitz valley.

Around Dippoldiswalde

13. Old town with MiBERZ and the tannery museum

After the 2002 flood, around 800-year-old silver mines turned up beneath Dippoldiswalde. The finds are on show at MiBERZ, the Museum of Medieval Mining in the Ore Mountains, inside the castle on Kirchplatz. The Lohgerber-Museum, a museum in a former tannery, won the Saxon Museum Prize in 2023. Both are within walking distance of our apartments. In detail: Discovering Dippoldiswalde.

14. Weißeritztalbahn steam railway

This narrow-gauge line runs about 26 kilometres from Freital-Hainsberg via Dippoldiswalde to Kurort Kipsdorf, all year round and pulled by steam engines. After the 2002 flood it took until 2017 for trains to reach Kipsdorf again. From Altenberg, the easiest place to board is Kipsdorf. Timetable at weisseritztalbahn.com, background in our article on the Weißeritztalbahn.

15. Malter reservoir

Built between 1908 and 1913, Malter isn't a drinking-water reservoir, which is why swimming is allowed at several beaches around the lake. A shoreline path of about 6.5 kilometres goes all the way round. Hot weekends get busy; weekdays are noticeably quieter. Details: Malter reservoir, more swimming spots in Swimming in the Eastern Ore Mountains.

16. Rabenauer Grund

A narrow, rocky gorge of the Rote Weißeritz river between Malter and Freital-Hainsberg, about twelve kilometres on foot. The clever part: the Weißeritztalbahn runs through the same valley, so you can walk one way and ride back. The route is in our article on the Rabenauer Grund.

Between the two houses

17. Glashütte

The watchmaking town in the Müglitz valley sits almost exactly halfway between Altenberg and Dippoldiswalde. According to its own website, the German Watch Museum on Schillerstraße opens Wednesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm, with Mondays and Tuesdays reserved for booked groups. Glashütte has a station on the Müglitztalbahn. More in Glashütte.

18. Frauenstein

The castle ruin of Frauenstein is considered the largest in Saxony, with a Renaissance palace from 1588 below it. Since 2021 the Gottfried Silbermann Museum on the market square has told the story of the famous organ builder, who grew up here. The ruin is outdoors; the museum is your rain option.

19. Weesenstein Castle

A castle built from the top down: because it sits on a rock above the Müglitz, the cellars are on the fifth floor and the stables on the fourth. Weesenstein is now a museum run by Saxony's state palaces administration and has its own stop on the Müglitztalbahn. It's the northernmost place in the valley, closer to Dresden than to Altenberg.

Across the border

20. Cínovec and Komáří vížka

Beyond Zinnwald lies Cínovec, the Czech half of the same mining village. A few kilometres east, the Komáří vížka summit (Mückentürmchen in German) carries a bell tower from 1568 that once called miners to their shifts. The view reaches far across the North Bohemian Basin. A chairlift climbs up from Bohosudov; at about 2.3 kilometres it is one of the longest in Czechia without an intermediate station. Check whether it is running before you go. More in Day trip to Czechia.

21. Teplice

The spa town lies down in the basin, about 20 kilometres from Altenberg via Cínovec. A stroll through the spa park and castle gardens with a stop at a café is the usual plan. In the rain you still have the cafés and the museum in the castle.

Bigger day trips

22. Dresden

About 35 minutes from Dippoldiswalde, just under an hour from Altenberg. Without a car, the PlusBus 360 runs from both towns to Dresden main station. A realistic day plan with parking tips is in Dresden as a day trip.

23. Freiberg

The mining town west of Dippoldiswalde has a cathedral with Silbermann organs, the terra mineralia mineral collection in Freudenstein Castle and a silver mine you can visit. A good rainy-day plan, since nearly everything is indoors.

24. Seiffen

The toy-making village is just under an hour from either house. In Advent it gets very crowded and the car parks fill up early at weekends. When best to go is in Seiffen and our overview of Christmas markets.

25. Saxon Switzerland

The Bastei, Königstein Fortress and the Schrammsteine rocks are a good hour from Altenberg and a little less from Dippoldiswalde. The Bastei Bridge gets very busy from late morning, so an early start pays off. More in Saxon Switzerland.

Choosing by weather and season

  • Rainy day: mining museum, Zinnwald show mine, watch museum, Weesenstein, Lauenstein, Freiberg. We've collected twelve ideas in Eastern Ore Mountains in the rain.
  • Winter: many walks still work in snow, plus the ski slope, cross-country trails and the bob track. Everything is in Winter holidays in Altenberg.
  • Summer: Malter for swimming, the botanical garden, the toboggan run. In a heatwave the ridge is a few degrees cooler than Dresden.
  • Autumn: long views from Geisingberg and Komáří vížka, and if you know what you're doing, mushrooms.

Which month suits which plan is in Best time to visit the Eastern Ore Mountains, and how to get here in Getting to the Eastern Ore Mountains. After a long day out, Ore Mountains food helps you pick dinner.

Where to stay

For places 1 to 12 and the trips into Czechia, Altenberg is the shortest base: eight rooms at Dresdner Straße 10, each with its own bathroom and toilet, seven for up to two guests and one for up to three, from €70 per night. Guests share the kitchen and laundry area.

For Dresden, the steam railway, Malter and the Rabenauer Grund, our two apartments at Bahnhofstraße 15 in Dippoldiswalde are better placed, for up to four and five guests respectively, each with its own kitchen, also from €70 per night. If you can't decide, read Altenberg or Dippoldiswalde?

Frequently asked questions

  • Can you explore the Eastern Ore Mountains without a car?

Much of it, yes. The Müglitztalbahn train (RB 72) runs from Heidenau via Weesenstein, Glashütte and Lauenstein to Altenberg, the PlusBus 360 links Dresden with Dippoldiswalde and Altenberg, and the Weißeritztalbahn steam railway stops in Dippoldiswalde. For Frauenstein, Seiffen or Komáří vížka a car is far more convenient.

  • Which places in the Eastern Ore Mountains are free to visit?

The mining trail around the Altenberg Pinge, the walks up Geisingberg, Kahleberg, the Lugsteine and Kohlhaukuppe, the shoreline path at Malter reservoir and the Rabenauer Grund gorge cost nothing. At the Erlebnisberg in Altenberg entry is free and you pay per ride.

  • What do I need for a day trip to Czechia?

A valid ID card or passport. Czechia uses the koruna, though many places accept cards. Checks at the border can happen at any time, so keep your ID with you.
